PROJECT INFORMATION

Platinum Electricians was contracted to perform a comprehensive electrical upgrade and installation of charging infrastructure at Brush Farm Corrective Services Academy Eastwood. This project was designed to modernise the electrical system and provide electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities, aligning with the client’s sustainability goals.

SCOPE:

The project at Brush Farm Eastwood included a range of electrical services, from preliminary site preparation and design reviews to the installation of advanced electrical equipment and EV chargers. Our team worked closely with the client to ensure that all works were completed efficiently and in accordance with safety standards.

KEY WORKS COMPLETED

Preliminary Work and Site Setup:
  • Bank Guarantees: Security provided in the form of bank guarantees.
  • Project Insurance: Ensured the site and workers were covered throughout the project.
  • Barricading: Installed barricades to close off and protect the work area.

Design Review and Shop Drawings:
  • Conducted a detailed design review and developed shop drawings to plan the electrical installation, ensuring compliance with Brush Farm's requirements and safety regulations.

Cabling, Fixings, and Materials:
  • Installed submain cables and isolators to support the new electrical infrastructure.
  • Supplied and installed trays with lids to secure cabling, ensuring both protection and compliance with electrical standards.
  • Installed EV chargers on AC pedestals, each equipped with sim cards for monitoring.
    Installed wheel stops for the EV charging bays.
  • Provided necessary sundries and materials, including a distribution board, KWH meter, current transformers, and protection devices (RCBOs, MCBs).
  • Skilled tradespeople worked during off-peak hours (in lieu of day shifts) to minimise disruption to Brush Farm operations.

Main Switchboard (MSB) Modifications and Authority Fees:

Carried out necessary modifications to the main switchboard (MSB) to accommodate the additional load required by the EV chargers and other new installations.

Submitted relevant authority applications and managed load requests.

DLMS (Digital Load Management System):
  • Installed a Digital Load Management System with up to 8 licenses for ongoing monitoring of the electrical system.
  • Installed Rogowski CTs, extenders, RS485 cables, and a 4G router with an antenna to ensure smooth data transmission.
  • Skilled tradespeople and apprentices carried out installations during off-peak hours.

Commissioning of EV Chargers:
  • Configured and commissioned the EV chargers using Chargefox software.
  • Performed thorough testing of the chargers to ensure optimal performance and compliance with Brush Farm's specifications.
  • Conducted commissioning activities with skilled tradesmen and apprentices.

As-Built Drawings and OAM (Operations and Maintenance) Manuals:
  • Delivered comprehensive as-built drawings and operations and maintenance manuals to the client for future reference and compliance.

SwitchDin Droplet Installation:
  • Installed a SwitchDin Droplet and Controller to allow for advanced energy management and monitoring of the EV chargers.

CHALLENGES OVERCOME

One of the major challenges was coordinating off-peak work shifts to minimise disruption to the correctional centre’s daily operations. Additionally, ensuring that the design and installation met Brush Farm's requirements while adhering to the latest EV charging standards required meticulous planning and execution.

The project was completed on time and within budget, providing Brush Farm Eastwood with a modernised electrical system that supports their long-term sustainability goals. The installation of the EV chargers has not only improved the site’s energy efficiency but also positioned Brush Farm as a forward-thinking organisation committed to reducing its carbon footprint.
