PROJECT INFORMATION
Platinum Electricians was engaged by the Department of Education (DOE) to complete a region-wide RCD Compliance Program across multiple schools within the DOE (South) portfolio. The project aimed to enhance electrical safety by retrofitting or replacing approximately 2,000 Residual Current Devices (RCDs), modifying switchboards, and ensuring all works met current compliance standards.

Solutions

KEY DELIVERABLES:
- Retrofitting or replacing RCD/MCBs
- Modifying or upgrading switchboards
- Replacing chassis and escutcheons where required
- Testing, commissioning, and compliance reporting
- Updating circuit schedules and asset registers
- Delivering as-built documentation and training school staff on new equipment
CHALLENGES
The biggest challenge for this project was coordinating works across multiple live school environments while ensuring minimal disruption to students and staff. With strict time constraints during school holiday periods, our team had to work efficiently and flexibly across multiple sites simultaneously.
Additional challenges included:
- Managing power outages with minimal notice.
- Navigating existing hazardous materials such as asbestos within older switchboards.
- Ensuring timely procurement of all required RCDs and switchboard components.
OUR SOLUTION
Our solution was underpinned by strong project planning and stakeholder engagement. Prior to commencing works, we contacted all school representatives to confirm schedules and gain access approvals. We also submitted detailed WHS, Environmental, and Security Management Plans to ensure compliance with DOE policies.
Three dedicated teams were mobilised to complete installations concurrently across eight schools during the school holidays. A structured approach included:
- Pre-site inspections to verify RCD requirements
- Sequenced shutdown schedules to manage power interruptions
- On-site supervision with LV Rescue-trained technicians
- Real-time documentation updates and asset register alignment

KEY OUTCOMES
- 2,000+ RCDs upgraded across 8 schools .
- Zero safety incidents reported.
- All works aligned with AS/NZS 61439 and DOE standards.
- School operations were unaffected, with works conducted outside teaching hours.
