PROJECT INFORMATION
The University of Sydney engaged Platinum Electricians to upgrade the electrical reticulation systems at the Camden Campus as part of its Deferred Maintenance Program. The project focused on replacing and renewing Residual Current Devices (RCDs) and upgrading Distribution Boards (DBs) to enhance electrical safety and reliability.
Given the importance of minimising disruptions to University operations, the project was meticulously planned and executed within a structured timeline, ensuring all electrical services were safely reinstated after each upgrade.

RCD and Circuit Breaker Upgrades
- Identified and replaced outdated RCDs and circuit breakers across multiple buildings.
- Conducted insulation resistance testing, polarity checks, fault loop impedance testing, and earth continuity verification.
- Installed new engraved labels and updated circuit schedules.
Distribution Board (DB) Upgrades
- Decommissioned and replaced existing DBs in line with the University’s Electrical Services Standard V.4.
- Installed new CBs and RCBOs, ensuring compliance with updated safety standards.
- Conducted testing prior to re-energization and completed all necessary asset labeling and data collection.
Safety and Compliance Measures
- Submitted power disruption request permits at least two weeks before planned shutdowns.
- Ensured at least two LV Rescue trained technicians were present during all switchboard replacements.
- Provided documentation including before-and-after photos, warranty certificates, and updated asset data registers.
CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS
Minimising Operational Disruptions
- Work schedules were carefully coordinated with university stakeholders to avoid peak activity periods.
- Temporary power solutions were assessed and implemented where required to maintain essential services.
Hazardous Materials Management
- Identified and safely managed hazardous materials (such as asbestos) where noted in pre-project audits.
- Trained personnel ensured compliance with all environmental and safety regulations.
Logistics & Coordination
- The project involved working across multiple buildings and distribution boards, requiring a highly structured timeline and sequencing of works.
- Effective stakeholder communication ensured smooth execution and timely completion.

RESULTS
The successful completion of the RCD and DB upgrades improved electrical safety across the Camden Campus, reducing the risk of electrical faults and ensuring compliance with modern standards. Through careful planning and execution, Platinum Electricians delivered a high-quality upgrade while minimising impact on university operations.
